Stolen Generations survivor, Cheryl Green grew up in Brisbane and was happy to meet her cousins for the first time in her hometown, facilitated by Link-Up (Qld).
“I grew up in Brisbane with a non-Indigenous family who were extremely supportive and still are. I have worked in various jobs, including insurance and hospitality. I heard about Link-Up (Qld) through a mutual friend, who knew I was interested in finding out about my Indigenous heritage.”
Link-Up (Qld) provides essential services to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people separated from their families and communities through forced removal, fostering, adoption, or institutionalisation. Our reunion services aim to bring families back together and rebuild lost connections.
Cheryl’s reunion was a significant event. “The reunion I had was with my first cousins for a dinner at South Bank in Brisbane,” she recalls. “Leading up to the reunion, I was a bit scared about how it would eventuate and whether we would feel comfortable with each other.”

The support provided by Link-Up (Qld) was crucial in making this reunion possible. Our team offers comprehensive assistance, including counselling, research, and practical support, ensuring individuals like Cheryl feel supported throughout the process. Cheryl’s daughter-in-law, Georgia, was her support person, providing emotional and moral support during this pivotal moment.
When asked about her hopes for the reunion, Cheryl said, “To be able to keep in contact with each other and grow the connection further. For my children and their families to have some connection with them also.”
