SUSTAINING CONNECTIONS ART INITIATIVE 2010

Link-Up (Qld) Aboriginal Corporation and Swinburne University engaged and provided training for
Aboriginal arts facilitators from a range of urban, regional and remote communities across Queensland
to work with their local Aboriginal community in a 'connecting art' initiative.
Locations with high proportions of Stolen Generation people were prioritized.
Facilitators conducted workshops where Aboriginal people sat together talking, sharing stories and painting images
that connected together to produce a whole group image.
This visual sharing  and the overall pattern that emerged provided a rare and powerful experience
for many participants.
These art works speak volumes and demonstrate the cultural innovation possible
when groups come together in respect.
The connective art program provides a safe cultural space where many things
can be shared and well being can be facilitated and sustained through deeper human connections.

Brisbane Workshop

The Sustaining Connections Project involves the application of a design-based methodology to produce interconnected art works within Aboriginal communities.
These artworks will then be brought together in Brisbane for a major Exhibition event,
photographed and returned after the event.
The process of producing interconnecting art works will represent the cultural connections of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Queensland and provide images and words that
depict and describe the significance of these connections through the theme.

Link Up (Qld) Aboriginal Corporation is hosting this initiative with collaboration and support from Swinburne University.

DALBY WORKSHOP

LUQ Board Member Norm Sheehan and LUQ SEWB Counsellor Mati Mistry went to the final Day of the Art Initiative in Dalby on Friday15th October 2010. The programme was attended by local authorities, media personell as well as local community Elders and  community members. The hall was a hive of activity whilst setting up lunch with the laughter of children excited about performing on the day. The Art work was displayed for all to see.  Many of the participants performed dance, music and recited poetry in celebration of what had been achieved in the community. Certificates of appreciations were handed out to the Shire council and other organisations assisting the facilitators, as well as all the participants who joined the Art Initiative programme.
The hour programme was entertaining and moving, one Elder stated to Norm that “this programme had bought life back into the community, and that the community was waiting for an opportunity to bring art and music together”. Ann Lawton and Lionel did a fantastic job as facilitators. Ann’s drive was a major contributing factor to the great success of the project as she skillfully engaged many members of the community and the local authorities to support the project.
